With its many marked footpaths, providing over a hundred kilometres of uninterrupted, varying terrain, Cauterets is a paradise for runners. Because of its popularity with runners, Cauterets now hosts one of the stages of the European Mountain Running Championships every year which is televised and attended by teams from over twenty nations.

Whether you want a 20 minute gentle stroll up to a spectacular waterfall or if you prefer trekking over vast snow capped mountain tops bordering France and Spain, then you need look no further.
Cauterets offers rewarding walks for all ages and abilities during the summer with more than 100 marked footpaths within its National Park. From the town, you can enjoy many walks through lush forests, hidden pastures, alongside mountain streams or up close to magnificent water falls. The more adventurous trekkers can even climb to the summit of Vignemale, the highest mountain in the French Pyrenees (3298m).
Pont D’Espagne lies in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park and is only 7km from the town by car or bus. From here you can access the Lac de Gaube and green valleys of Cayan and Marcadau. You can also make use of one of the many mountain refuges providing food and accommodation dotted along the way and over the border into Spain.
The famous GR10 walking route is a lower level traverse throughout France stretching across 800km. It is marked with red and white painted bars and passes through Cauterets.

Both mountain and road biking are very popular in and around Cauterets due to an extensive range of marked routes for all abilities. You can experience serene rural routes, ranging from easy to strenuous and covering a vast array of landscapes from waterfalls cascading from steep cliffs to challenging downhill descents through shady woodlands.
For hardcore bike enthusiasts, the Col Du Tourmalet is the highest of the French Pyrenean road cols and one of the most famous biking challenges in France. It is frequently included in the Tour de France route.
